An elderly woman has died in a house fire in Plymouth overnight.

The 84 year old was trapped in the premises in Kenley Gardens in Ernesettle, after the fire broke out just after midnight. She was rescued from the house by firefighters but efforts to save her life were unsuccessful.

A man was also rescued from the premises. He's been taken to Derriford hospital where his condition is said to be critical.

Fire investigators are returning to the scene this morning to try to determine the cause.
