University and college lecturers to strike

University and college lecturers across Plymouth are to strike next week over pensions and pay.

There was outrage last week when the government revealed that pensions could be based on average salary rather than final salary in the future.

Meanwhile unions say lecturers are still paid significantly less than teachers in many cases.

Staff at city college Plymouth, Marjon, the university and the art college are likely to take part next Thursday.

Lecturers were offered a 0.2% increase in their pay, which equates to around fifty pounds in many cases- teachers have accfepted more than two per cent.

Meanwhile the university is likely to announce how much it will charge students in fees in future later today.

The latest figures suggest their funding has fallen by almost five per cent.
