Unions say health reforms are 'blatant privatisation'

Plymouth's health unions say the government's becoming 'more blatant about privatising the NHS'.

The Health Bill would see GPs given power over budgets and commissioning services, while primary care trusts would be scrapped.

At Derriford hospital, hundreds of posts have been cut, there has been a reduction in beds and two operating theatres have been shut.

Unison claim that under the plans, more private patients would be using NHS services too.

The government says the changes are not about privatisation, but about reducing bureaucracy and providing more choice to patients.

Suzie Franklin's the branch secretary of Derriford Unison - she says they want to make sure people know what this will mean for the health service in Plymouth where services like the Cumberland centre have been taken over by private companies.

They're holding a rally in the city centre today from midday.
