Unions hold protest to save region's last Remploy factory

Remploy workers will be protesting in Plymouth city centre this lunchtime in solidarity with their Cornish colleagues.

The public workshops could close according to unions, if government funding is withdrawn.

Plymouth's site has already closed and the only one now left in the region is at Penzance.

Remploy largely takes on disabled workers and unions claim around 85% of those who lost their jobs in 2007 still don't have a paid job now.

The GMB say all remaining 54 Remploy factories are under threat if the government goes ahead with plans to end public funding for them.

The protest starts at 11:30am today at the sun dial.
