Unions call for proportion of council tax paid to Police and Fire service to be put up

Putting up the proportion of council tax paid to Devon and Cornwall police by just under four per cent could save more than 100 officer posts, according to unions.

Today the police authority meets to decide whether to accept a government grant to freeze council tax.

If they decide against taking a grant, it's likely to result in an increase in bills by around five or six pounds a year.

A report to the police authority says a small increase in the precept would still mean more than 750 officers leave over the next four years, but if they take this up to just under four percent, that drops to around 630.

The fire authority also meet today and they're considering putting their council tax precept up by three per cent.
