Uni applications up despite hike in fees

UCAS applications to Plymouth university have gone down slightly but overall applications have gone up by 11% compared with 2011.

That means that the number of UK students trying to get in has gone down a little, but those applying from abroad has gone up.

Applications to subjects which lead directly to a certain career have also gone up - economics has more than doubled and nursing applications have gone up by more than half.

But the number of students over 30 trying to get a place has dropped sixteen per cent.

Deputy vice chancellor Bill Rammell says the figures could have been worse with the new £9000 fees coming in this September. He says there was a fear the number of applications would plummet but that hasn't happened.
