Thousands to protest Brixham coastguard closure

It's hoped that thousands of people from across South Devon will take part in a demonstration today to fight the proposed closure of the Brixham Coastguard Station.

The rally comes just hours before a public meeting where officials from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency will be setting out their plans, which include reducing the number of 24 hour stations to just three. It will mean the closure of Brixham coastguard station with a loss of 23 jobs, and stations like Falmouth will only operate during daylight hours.

Officials say new technology will mean safety isn't compromised, but many locals aren't convinced.

Mick Cooke from the Brixham Coastguard Station, says this is a chance for people to make their voices heard.
