Taxi driver jailed for crossing death

A Plymouth taxi driver has been jailed for four years for causing the death of a pensioner by dangerous driving.

In December, 44 year old Andrew Bates was found guilty of causing the death of Gordon Hollister a year earlier.

The 76 year old was crossing the road near Woolwell roundabout when he was hit by Mr Bates' taxi.

The prosecution argued Bates had been trying to overtake a cement lorry near traffic lights and described him as an 'amber gambler' who had jumped the lights with tragic consequences.

The taxi driver denied the charges and insisted he was almost sure the light was green when he went through it but the jury agreed with the prosecution and he was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

Bates has been sentenced to four years in prison.
