Sub dismantling exhibition underway

Today is the first opportunity for Plymothians to find out more about the possible dismantling of nuclear submarines in the city.

A consultation has been launched and today Admiral Simon Lister will be at the Guildhall to explain the proposals.

The MOD must choose between Plymouth and Rosyth as possible sites.

As well as dismantling the submarines, they must also decide where to store the nuclear waste.

Del Northcott from the Prospect union at Devonport Dockyard says anti nuclear campaigners are being short sighted because the dockyard employs 5000 direct employees and 30,000 indirect employees. He says campaigners' claims that dismantling nuclear subs is unsafe are unfounded.

Tony Staunton from the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament disagrees though - he says it would safeguard some jobs at the dockyard but thousands of jobs are being lost elsewhere in the city.

The exhibitions at the Plymouth Guildhall run from 11 until 7 for the next five days. In Decemebr there will be more events in Callington and Torpoint.
