South West declared drought zone

The South West has been declared an environmental drought zone.

16 of the last 25 months have had below average rainfall, which its claimed is taking its toll river levels and the environment.

It doesn't mean hosepipe bans though - South West Water say there'll be no restrictions but they are advising people to use water more efficiently.

Ben Johnstone's the strategic drought manager for the Environment Agency - he says rainfall helps with oxygen levels and washing out pollutants in river beds so if the situation gets any worse, it will have an impact on fish populations and other wildlife like water voles and anphibians, which will struggle to find food in dry conditions.

Both the Environment Agency and South West Water say there are small steps people can take to save water such as making sure taps are turned off properly, not leaving them running while washing your hands or teeth and taking shorter showers.
