Significant drop in number of people on dole

The number of people claiming Jobseekers' allowance in Plymouth has fallen for the third month in a row.

6396 people were on the dole in the city in December, that's more than 300 fewer than in November.

That's 486 more than the same period last year though.

The number of people unemployed nationally has risen to a 17 year high. It hit almost 2.7 million in the 3 months to November.

18 year old Nathan Summerfield's an apprentice carpenter with Barratt homes - he's currently working on the regeneration project in North Prospect and says he knows not all young people have been as lucky. He claims many employers won't take on a young person because of all the training that involves.
