Sherford gets final go ahead

Parish councillors against the building of 5500 new homes on the outskirts of Plymouth say they don't believe the roads will be upgraded quickly enough to cope.

Yesterday the city council gave the final green light to the creation of Sherford, which will  lead to further upgrades to the roads around Elburton and a new park and ride at Deep Lane.

Some parish councillors from areas like Brixton and Yealmpton have argued that there should be more affordable housing and that the plans have changed significantly since they were first given approval in 2008.

Keith Baldry represents Yealmpton on South Hams District council - he says many of the transport changes will come too late because some of the houses will already be built before the improvements are made.

The city council argues boosting the city's population will unlock more investment in future and that the area needs more housing.

Developers Red Tree say it will also create up to seven thousand jobs.

James Koe from the developers says they have fully considered all the transport implications.
