Senior naval officers to lose jobs, say MOD

A number of senior naval officers are to lose their jobs, but it's not yet clear what the impact will be on Plymouth.

The MOD has revealed the second wave of redundancies today following the defence review of 2010.

400 Naval jobs, 2900 Army jobs and 1000 RAF posts are going.

Within the Navy, that will include 5 commodores, 17 captains and 19 colonels - lower ranks will be largely unaffected.

The cuts are part of the 17-thousand redundancies announced by the defence secretary in 2010 in the strategic defence review.

Labour have argued the government needs to be clearer about its strategy for the Armed forces - they say there's been no explanation alongside these cuts.

It's not clear exactly where the axe will fall yet and Plymouth MP and shadow defence minister Alison Seabeck says she has already been in contact with constituents concerned that they will be affected.

Plymouth lost four of its Devonport-based frigates in the last wave of cuts.
