Radiotherapy machine at Derriford is needed now, say campaigners

A westcountry woman is continuing her campaign to have a specialist radiotherapy machine installed at Derriford hospital.

Ruth Peberdy will be collecting signatures on a petition in Plymouth city centre today. It follows the news that the purchase of a £2m Cyberknife is to be delayed due to budgetary constraints.

Ruth's husband Ron died of pancreatic cancer in 2005, but she says treatment from a cyberknife in Florida gave him a better quality of life.

Plymouth hospitals NHS Trust says it is still looking to buy the machine over a period of two years from 2012.

Ruth says that's not good enough and she's worried there could be further delays as it would've been the only fully funded Cyberknife in the south west.
