Police discuss possible fifty million pound cuts to budget

Proposals to cut around 1200 posts at Devon and Cornwall police will be discussed later.

The force must save almost fifty million pounds over the next four years.

This could mean 590 officers and up to 500 civilan staff having to go  - officers with more than thirty years service will leave in April.

Proposals to make the force more efficient include sharing more services with other forces  and removing enquiry offices at more than thirty stations.

Though the force insists they still want to remain the third safest place to live in the country despite the cuts, unions say they aren't convinced.
