Plympton's library officially opens 4 years after fire

Plympton's new state-of-the-art library will be officially opened this morning.

The old one burned down in 2008 and locals have been using a temporary facility on the Ridgeway ever since.

The new building, which is one the same site as the old one next to Harewood House, is bigger than the old one, and has computers, a meeting room, staff room and toilets.

There've been library closures and a reduction in opening hours elsewhere, but the city council has been working with agencies like the job centre and the police to find other uses for Plymouth's libraries to avoid doing that here.

Councillor Glen Jordan says it's about adapting the use of libraries to suit the needs of its users so there are now lectures and talks in them, singing lessons, youth groups and you can use computers there, borrow DVDs and CDs.
