Plymouth teacher says he has been treated appallingly over £2600 tax bill

A Plymouth MP has taken up the case of a local teacher who has just been sent a tax bill for two thousand six hundred pounds.

29 year old Jonathan Garnett Smith insists he repeatedly flagged up with HMRC that he was working for both Cornwall Council and Plymouth city council and didn't believe he was paying enough tax.

His appeal against the bill was rejected and he is now repaying the money after apparently being told he could go to prison if he didn't.

Alison Seabeck has raised the issue in Parliament, arguing that it should have been picked up sooner and dealt with.

Jonathan says he hasn't even had his complaints acknowledged.

HMRC say they are unable to comment on individual cases, but will contact Mr Garnett Smith to discuss the matter.

They add that when people have paid too little tax, the money is normally recovered in instalments over the next year, but that this can be extended if this causes problems.
