Plymouth taxi driver convicted of causing death of pensioner by dangerous driving

A  Plymouth taxi driver will be sentenced next month after he was convicted of caused the death of an elderly man by dangerous driving.

The prosecution claimed that 44 year old Andrew Bates from Honicknowle had been trying to overtake a cement lorry at the pedestrian crossing near Woolwell roundabout which had tragic consequences.

76 year old Gordon Hollister, known to those close to him as Peter, died when he was hit by Bates' taxi on the crossing on December 13th last year.

Bates denied the charges against him - he'd told the court he was 'almost sure' the traffic lights were green when he drove through them.

The Judge granted Bates unconditional bail until his sentencing on January 20th.

But he imposed an interim driving ban and warned it was all but 'inevitable' that he would get a custodial sentence.
