Plymouth pole dancing instructor criticises new sexual entertainment policy

A Plymouth pole dancing instructor has criticised the upcoming debate on how to license so called sexual entertainment venues in the city.

The city council wants to change its policy so that lap dancing clubs are dealt with  using the same legislation as sex shops and cinemas.

The local authority says at the moment it has very little control over the numbers of lapdancing clubs and wants to set limits on the numbers that can open in Union Street and the city centre.

But Sam Remmer, who runs the Art of Dance and offers pole dancing performances and lessons, says if her work is classed as sexual entertainment, she could be forced to buy a license.

She argues that not only has a cost implication for her business, but that as her work is about fitness, being classed as 'sexual entertainment' could put people off coming to classes.
