Plymouth has key role in Navy's future, says PM

The Prime Minister has told Plymothians the city will continue to play a key role in naval defence.

David Cameron is in Plymouth this afternoon. He's already presented a number of promotion awards to warrant officers at Stonehouse Barracks and thanked local marines for their work in Afghanistan, then he held a public meeting at Babcock Marine.

A public consultation is currently underway on whether nuclear submarines should be dismantled in the city. Some campaign groups argue Devonport will become little more than a nuclear scrapyard. There are also fears that most of the new frigates being built will be based at Portsmouth.

But Mr Cameron says he is here to see the work being carried out in Plymouth and that they want the city to be an important part of the Navy's future.
