Plymouth fails in bid to become enterprise zone

Plymouth has not been awarded enterprise zone status by the government.

The city was one of 29 bids being asssessed in the second round  - Plymouth had hoped to become a zone specialising in the marine sector and it would have meant tax breaks and reduced planning regulations.

But while Plymouth was unsuccessful, Newquay's proposal for a zone based around their airport was approved.

Chair of Devon and Somerset's local enterprise partnership Tim Jones has said it really isn't the end of the world for Plymouth, as it is already building its marine centre at the university of Plymouth and has an enterprise zone for new firms.

The Department for communities and local government has said they were impressed by the quality of the bids submitted, but were only ever going to be able to select a limited number.

They add that they will keep working with the unsuccessful bids to try and boost economic growth.
