Plymouth Airport closes

Plymouth Airport will close its gates this evening for the final time.

City councillors agreed with Sutton Harbour Holdings in August that the site is no longer commercialy viable.

Flights ended in September and the private flying school moved to Newquay.

Campaign group VIABLE say they still want to try and reopen the site next year.

Former operations manager at Air South West Rob Springett believes they should focus on encouraging private charter flights rather than commercial services - he has said commercial passengers have often been put off by the fact that they had to stop on the way to most destinations.

No one from Sutton Harbour Holdings has been available for interview, but they say they will now work with Plymouth city council  to decide on the best future for the site, but that it's too early to say what this might be.

They have also thanked airport staff for working in difficult circumstances in recent months.
