Plymothians protest cuts and incinerator in 'MayDay march'

There's growing anger at public sector cuts in Plymouth.

Trade unions are gearing up for strike action to defend services and jobs in the city.

Today, campaigners are taking to the streets to demonstrate against job losses in the NHS, the city council and civil service, among other industries.

Tony Staunton, secretary of Plymouth's TUC, says the cuts are not necessary and the Plymouth unions will not sit back and let them be made.

Meanwhile, campaigners against plans to build a waste incinerator at Devonport dockyard will also be demonstrating in Plymouth today.

Many local residents have concerns about the health risks associated with the waste plant.

But the south west devon waste partnership maintains there are no health risks.

Campaign group 'Incineration is wrong' say they're not being given the whole truth by the partnership - they're only getting 'stock answers'.

Helen Keats is one of the campaigners. She says she's confident they can stop the build going ahead because they still haven't got planning permission yet and would still have to wait for an operating permit.

The protests start at 12 noon outside the Guildhall.
