Pilot launched to keep night-time revellers safe

A pilot scheme's being launched in Plymouth tonight to try to keep people safe during a night out and reduce pressure on the city's ambulance and hospital services.

Street Safe is run by a partnership between the local police, ambulance service and street pastors.

It's a mobile unit being set up at the Roland Levinsky building on North Hill every Saturday night for three months - if it works the trial could be extended.

It's hoped it will reduce some of the extra pressure put on paramedics and hospitals by drink or drug related incidents in the city centre.

Paul Cleeland-Smith's from the South Western Ambulance service - he says it's about providing a 'safe haven' for people who are on a night out.

Similar projects in other areas have resulted in reduced hospital admissions.
