People urged not to swim near bloom of algae in Plymouth Sound

It may be the start of a Bank holiday weekend, but people are being urged not to swim near a bloom of algae which has formed in Plymouth Sound.

Test results from the Health protection agency and environnment agency show that some of the algae could be harmful to marine life.

Some types of algae can produce toxins, although this type of bloom is a natural phenomenon.

The foam that comes ashore can also irritate sensitive skin.

It  means that any fish caught in the Sound shouldn't be eaten for the time being.

The advice is not to swim in or near the foam and if you do go in ,to wash your hands thoroughly before handling food.
