Officers 'sacrificing time off' to police Olympic torch relay

Some Plymouth police officers are sacrificing their time off to keep the city safe during the Olympic torch relay, according to unions.

It was revealed yesterday that 200 officers will be on patrol across Devon and Cornwall for the three days that the flame is in the region.

The force says it has the resources and funding to deal with the additional visitors, as it's also Lord Mayor's Day and the Powerboats are racing in Plymouth Sound.

Nigel Rabbitts from the Devon and Cornwall police federation says that isn't the full story though as many officers are giving up their weekend enjoying the spectacle with their families to ensure it can be policed properly.
