Non emergency 101 number rolled out

Almost half of the non emergency calls made to Devon and Cornwall police between October and December were to the new 101 number.

101 replaced the old non emergency number in September and today it's being rolled out nationally by policing minister Nick Herbert.

The idea is to make it easier for the public to remember, but Devon and Cornwall police say they still want to boost the numbers of people using it.

Superintendent Craig Downham says they're hoping the 101 number will be much easier for people to remember than the previous 0845 number.

Officers say people should call 999 if they are in immediate danger or believe a crime is happening as they speak - for burglaries or to report other crimes, they should call 101.
