No public inquiry into incinerator, says Communities Secretary

Communities secretary Eric Pickles says he won't be calling in the city council's decision to give planning permission to an incinerator in Devonport.

Mr Pickles was in Plymouth this week to visit a children's centre - but was met by a group of campaigners against the planned waste facility.

They argue the plant's emissions would pose a health risk and that the impact on traffic and the environment would be unacceptable.

But the city council disagree and have given MVV planning permission to build the plant - the environment agency still need to give it the green light before they can go ahead though.

Plymouth Moorview MP Alison Seabeck has written to Mr Pickles to ask him to reconsider calling in the issue but he says the decision is one that has to be made locally and unless Ms Seabeck's letter highlights new evidence, there won't be a public inquiry.
