Next phase of Barbican gasworks begins

A new round of road closures starts today as part of the ongoing Barbican gasworks.

The work began last month and will last until November as Wales and West utilities replace old metal gas pipes with plastic ones.

From today Vauxhall street will be closed from its junction with Buckwell street and Stillman street for two weeks, but diversions will be in place.

There will also be works on Vauxhall Quay and Sutton Wharf, which will involve some temporary lane closures on Tin Lane.

Wales and West Utilities say they have deliberately started the next phase of works after the Barbican jazz and blues festival.

They add that they have worked with waterfront firms to create new signs to highlight the fact that it's business as usual.

Some firms have still argued that it's making it much more difficult for visitors and shoppers to get into the city.
