New constituency could link North Devon and North Cornwall

Plymouth and Saltash will not be in the same parliamentary constituency under plans out today.

The independent boundary commission has published its proposals for changes to England's constituencies, in a bid to cut the number of MPs from 650 to 600.

Under the plans, the north of Devon would be linked with the north of Cornwall instead of an area traversing the river Tamar.

A 12-week consultation's been launched.

There would also be changes to Plymouth's constituencies under the proposals - the most significant is the planned new seat of Tavistock and Plympton, which would also take in Okehampton and parts of Moorview.

The current seat of Plymouth Sutton and Devonport would become Plymouth Sutton and include Plymstock, Wembury and Brixton.

Meanwhile the current Plymouth Moorview would become Devonport and include Stoke and Devonport.

Ivybridge would be absorbed into a new Totnes and Ivybridge constituency.
