Motorcyclist dies and multiple collisions cause chaos on A38

A motorcyclist has died  this morning following a series of accidents on the A38.

A van, a motorbike and two cars were involved in an accident on the eastbound carriageway near the St Budeaux turnoff at around seven o'clock  - a local man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene.

During rush hour there were then a further three accidents - one at Carkeel, one on the westbound carriageway near the Tamar Bridge and one between Forder Valley and Manadon.

Police are urging drivers to take care, as they say the subsequent accidents appear to have been caused by drivers' reactions to the traffic problems.

They are urging people to be patient and have asked anyone with information on the fatal accident to contact them on 101.

The scene of the fatal accident, the eastbound carriageway between St Budeaux and Manadon, will remain closed until at least three o'clock this afternoon.

The A38 westbound is also partially blocked between Manadon and Forder Valley due to an accident and there are also problems at Carkeel following a further accident.
