More protection needed for public woods, say Woodland Trust

An independent panel set up to assess the best way to manage England's woodland will be in South Devon today.

The panel on forestry was set up in March last year after the government abandoned plans to sell off large areas of public woodland - Cann Woods near Shaugh were amongst those at risk.

Today the panel will look at some privately owned woodland near Ivybridge - their final report to the government is expected in the spring.

Malcolm Allen is the Plymouth representative for the woodland trust, which has a seat on the panel - he says only a fifth of woodland is publically owned and they need to make sure that all of it has some protection.
