Man to be sentenced for attempted murder of Larry Speare's wife

A man will be sentenced for attempting to murder the wife of Plymouth businessman Larry Speare today.

35 year old Nicholas Killen attack on Shirley Speare was described by the judge as 'murderous and motiveless' when he appeared before Plymouth Crown Court in February.

It took a jury only two and a half hours to reach the unanimous verdict that he was guilty of attempted murder.

Mrs Speare had been walking her dog near her Yealmpton home in September 2009, when she was stabbed multiple times with a screwdriver.

Killen had denied any involvement in the attack but DNA evidence had placed him at the scene and police found a screwdriver with Mrs Speare's blood on it at his parent's home.

Today he'll be sentenced for attempted murder, which could see him jailed indefinitely.
