Local elections get underway

Plymothians will go to the polls today in all but one ward.

The city council holds its elections in thirds, which means that in three out of every four years, a third of the councillors must fight for their seat.

There will be an election in nineteen out of Plymouth's twenty wards, with only Plympton Chaddlewood not holding any elections.

There are seventy five candidates standing - only Labour and the Conservatives are fielding candidates in every ward.

There are eight liberal democrat candidates, seventeen UKIP candidates, seven people representing the green party, two independents and one from the trade unionists and socialists against cuts party.

Most wards are electing just one councillor this year, but in St Peter and the Waterfront, there will be a double election due to the resignation of Conservative Sally Stephens.

The Conservatives still hold a significant majority with 35 councillors, Labour have twenty and there is one independent.

Polling stations are open until 10pm - where you can also register your vote for the first electoral reform in thirty-six years.
