Labour criticises city council plans to spend almost two million on refuse trucks

Opposition councillors say the proposal to buy 15 new refuse trucks in Plymouth at a cost of almost two million pounds hasn't been properly thought through.

The idea has been called into a scrutiny committee today by Labour.

The local authority says in the long run it will save more than half a million pounds a year because they won't have to keep repairing them.

They argue it is more cost effective than renting the vehicles, although they will further examine the possibility of hiring them.

Labour leader on the council Tudor Evans believes the deal is reliant on the council selling the vehicles after five years and says if the current pilot on glass collections becomes permanent, these vehicles will not be suitable.

The city council says calling in the decision effectively suspends it to allow further discussion - they say they will wait until after the meeting before responding further.
