Initiative leads to dozens of new business start-ups

Dozens of new businesses have been created following the launch of a new enterprise programme in Plymouth.

The Urban enterprise initiative is partly funded by the city council and offers advice and support to new firms, particularly in areas such as Stonehouse, Barne Barton and North Prospect.

So far more than 400 people have used the start up programme, which offers help with marketing and accessing funding.

Tim and Mary Gilham are setting up their own catering business specialising in Caribbean food.

Mary says they took the decision when Tim was made redundant in 2009 and she would encourage others to take the plunge if they have a passion, a gift or talent.

Many of the programmes for new businesses are run by Outset Plymouth, which is celebrating its first birthday at the Devonport Guildhall today from 10am.
