Incinerator decision is called-in

Labour councillors are calling on Plymouth's conservative administration to rethink their approval of the business plan for a waste incinerator at Devonport.

Earlier this month, the proposals by MVV to construct a site at North Yard were deemed financially viable, although the firm still has to submit a planning application.

Some opposition councillors argue the cabinet didn't have all the correct information to hand when it made the decision.

The South West Devon waste partnership had suggested that the cost to all three councils would be more than £790m over 25 years.

Labour leader on the city council, Tudor Evans, says there were no financial figures in the report to cabinet and they didn't adequately consider alternative technologies like anaerobic digestion or increased recycling.

Meanwhile a second consultation has been launched into Viridor's proposals to build a waste incinerator at Lee Mill.

Although they were not the preferred bidder for the public waste plant, the firm still believes there is a need for another site.

They say the plant at North Yard wouldn't deal with all the waste generated locally.

Their planning application also asks for permission to build a new access road linking with the A38 - some alterations have been made to take account of the flood risks and residents' concerns over the increase in traffic.

Locals have until April 11th to have their say at www.devon.gov.uk
