Impact of cuts not yet clear for Plymouth's naval personnel

Plymouth's naval personnel still don't know whether their jobs are safe following yesterday's announcements over redundancies.

It was revealed that 1600 naval staff will be made redundant in the first wave of job losses, although 5000 posts will ultimately go.

A cross party delegation from Plymouth met with defence secretary Liam Fox yesterday to discuss the future of the dockyard and its type 23 frigates.

The type 22s are already being scrapped, although HMS Cumberland's stay in libya has been extended because of the current crisis.

MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport Oliver Colvile says that shows the government isn't making rash decisions because they're keeping her there until another ship can replace her.

But labour MP for Plymouth Moorview Alison Seabeck says she believes the government will regret this round of redundancies because experienced naval personnel could be lost.
