Hospital Radio gets top voluntary award

Hospital Radio Plymouth is to receive a prestigious volunteering award.

The Queen's award for voluntary service is equivalent to an MBE for charities and voluntary groups.

Only 750 groups across the country have received the award since it was launched in 2002.

Hospital Radio Plymouth is one of five Devon organisations that will be presented with the award at a ceremony in Exeter on the 17th June.

The team was nominated by a patient and listener at Derriford Hospital.

The volunteers visit patients on the wards as well as presenting shows.

Assistant station manager, Keith Jolley, says their work is important because some patients don't get many visitors while they're in hospital so they can be a friendly face in a time of need.
