HMS Cumberland returns to Plymouth today

HMS Cumberland, the Plymouth based frigate which has been central to the evacuation from Libya, sails home for the final time today.

HMS Cumberland left Plymouth in September on a counter piracy operation, but was asked to make 3 emergency visits to Libya in recent weeks.

She evacuated 454 people from the stricken country including 129 British citizens.

She was then deployed to help enfroce the arms embargo with NATO but has now handed over her duties to HMS Liverpool.

Cumberland is the 3rd of Plymouth's type 22 frigates to be scrapped. She will officially be decommissioned at a ceremony at the Devonport naval base on June 23rd.
