Health and Safety Executive halts work to demolish a post war building in Plymouth

Health and safety chiefs have stepped in to halt the demolition of a major building in the city centre.

The former 1950's building on Notte Street is gradually being pulled down because the university can't find anyone willing to take it on.

Many people have already opposed its demolition.

An executive from the HSE visited the site on Saturday and stopped demolition work on the grounds of public safety being compromised by the limited exclusion zone - discussions on its future will be held later today.

Architect Robert Bedner is urging the university to come up with an alternative use for the Hoe Centre...

He's from Plymouth firm 'Research Plus Design' and says the city should value its post war buildings.
