Former police officers launch legal challenge over job losses

Nearly one hundred former Devon and Cornwall police officers are taking legal action against the force after losing their jobs.

When officers reach 30 years' service, they're being forced to retire.

It's part of plans to save 50 million pounds by 2015 - 700 officer posts and 500 civilian posts are being cut in order to do that.

But more than 90 former Devon and Cornwall officers are lodging legal challenges - they say it's age discrimination and that the force hasn't consulted properly with those affected.

Nigel Rabbits is the chair of the police federation which represents rank and file officers in the region - he says cutting jobs is a bad move because it will have an impact on the force's ability to fight crime. He wants bosses to reconsider how they spend their budget.

Devon and Cornwall police say they're unable to comment because of the legal challenge.
