Fire service to conduct further talks on proposed shift changes

Further talks are to be held over controversial plans to ask some of Devon's firefighters to stay on call twenty four hours a day.

The controversial day crew plus system has been criticised by unions, who say it could lead to a ninety hour week for some staff.

As a result, the fire service will now hold a month of talks to try and come up with an alternative or address the concerns.

Other measures likely to be approved at a fire authority meeting this week include using smaller fire engines in some areas, possibly charging businesses for repeated false alarms and managing on fewer officers at some stations.

The Devon and Somerset fire service is facing a twenty five per cent budget cut over four years.
