Defence outlines case as taxi driver accused of causing death by dangerous driving

The defence have outlined their case in the trial of a Plymouth taxi driver accused of causing the death of a pensioner by dangerous driving.

Andrew Bates from Honicknowle was called as the only defence witness in his trial at Plymouth Crown Court.

He told the jury, he was 'almost sure' the traffic lights were green when he drove through them.

The 44 year old is accused of causing the death of 76 year old Gordon Hollister - known to his family and friends as Peter - at Woolwell roundabout in December last year.

During cross-examination, he told the court he was 'not in a rush' and when he checked his rear view mirror the traffic lights were still green.

The prosecution argue Bates sped up to overtake a cement lorry.

He denies the charges.

The trial continues.

That report was filed by the Herald's Tristan Nichols.
