Couple cut off by tide at Whitsands winched to safety

A Latvian couple had to be rescued near Whitsands overnight after they became trapped on a cliff.

Brixham coastguard received a call from the pair, who are in their twenties, at around eight o'clock last night when they became cut off by the tide.

Looe Coastguard, Tamar Coastguard and the Plymouth lifeboat all attended the location east of Tregantle - crews say it took them some time to establish where the couple were due to the language barrier.

The Navy helicopter from Culdrose winched the couple to safety as they were on exercise in the area.

People are being warned to check tide times, particularly if they don't know the area.
