Council hopes to avoid further redundancies

The man in charge of Plymouth city council finances says he will do all he can to avoid further compulsory redundancies at the local authority.

Yesterday the draft budget for the next financial year was approved by the cabinet as they attempt to make eight million pounds worth of savings.

To achieve their wider targets over three years, they must shed 500 posts - 356 have already been cut, of which 66 were compulsory redundancies.

Councillor Ian Bowyer says because there's a natural wastage rate of around three percent, they could reach their target of 500 posts through people retiring or leaving over the next three years.
