Council could take on city assets for £1

The city council will meet today to discuss whether to take on the freehold of two business parks and the Royal William Yard.

If agreed, the South West regional development agency would transfer the properties to the council for one pound.

It's thought taking on the land at Plymouth International Medical and Technology Park at Derriford and the Royal William Yard, could create thousands of jobs.

The south west RDA closes on the 31st of March next year - and as a result, it's selling off its assets to local authorities.

It's recommended the cabinet give the go-ahead for the transfer of the 'Plymouth asset package'.

The council will also consider buying Derriford business park, which it's hoped would help create 6000 new jobs in the area.

It's estimated another 700 jobs would be created at Royal William Yard, from the repair and conversion of buildings into business space.

If the cabinet don't accept the asset package, it could come under the ownership of other government agencies and then local control of the properties would be lost.
