Cornish students studying in Plymouth miss out on new bursary

Students who live in Cornwall but travel to Plymouth to attend school or college will miss out on a new bursary scheme.

This morning Cornwall council agreed to put in £700,000 to help A-level students struggling to meet transport or studying costs.

Colleges and schools will administer the funding, which has been put in place after the government withdrew the Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) in 2011.

It's only the second scheme of its kind in the country, but only Cornish residents who study in Cornwall will qualify.

Cornwall councillor Neil Burden says that can't be helped because there would be huge administration costs if students travelling to Plymouth or further afield for their studies were to get the bursaries too.
