Controversial phone mast plans go before city planners

Plans to put up a twenty metre phone mast on the site of the old Southway community college will be discussed by city councillors today.

The matter has been called in by a local councillor who believes it could damage the area.

The firm Everything everywhere, which is the parent company for Orange and T-mobile, wants to build the mast on a patch of grass near the old school car park.

It wants to replace the existing mast which is on the roof of the old school, because the building is likely to be demolished in the near future.

Two letters of objection have been received from residents who live near the old Southway community college, who say it will be too close to their gardens and could create a noise disturbance.

However the application is recommended for conditional approval - the report states that other sites have been sought and that there were no objections from the nearby school or doctors' surgery - while acknowledging that the mast will tower above some properties, it says the area is likely to be redeveloped soon with new sports facilities and that landscaping should soften its appearance.

They add that there are not considered to be any health risks and that the mast is needed to maintain the city's telecommunications network.

Meanwhile, the next phase of a ten year project to demolish and rebuild much of North Prospect will also be considered by city councillors today.

Plymouth community homes want to build more than forty flats and thirty houses in the North Prospect road and Cookworthy road areas.
