Controversial block of flats at West Hoe approved

Campaigners against plans to build a block of flats on the site of old tennis courts at West Hoe have said they haven't decided what to do next after it was approved today.

The Devington Homes development on Pier Street was passed second time around after the developers removed a floor to make it a four storey building.

English Heritage also agreed that this was more in keeping with the area.

But campaigners say the flat roofing is not in keeping with the Victorian parade and that it will  block out the light for many local residents.

They also argue that the development is not affordable housing and won't benefit the area.

Devington Homes has previously said they have worked hard to consult with residents and that having new apartments there will be a boost for the local area.

The city council have not been available for comment so far this afternoon.
